\nThe Network reveals a\u00a0powerful, evolving portrait of the potential of how neurodivergence entangles with creativity. Our\u00a0narratives do not just describe existing ideologies; rather, they\u00a0create<\/i>\u00a0them (Weeks 1998). The Network itself was born largely from the UK\u2019s first lockdown. 120 people joined by March 2020.\u00a0Self-starters with\u00a0<\/b>initiatives in diverse fields abound. We\u00a0are from the arts (eg an artist featured at London 2012 Paralympics and Rockerfeller Centre), performance (eg Scottish Neurodiverse Performance Network), mental health (eg AttentionUK), galleries (eg Attenborough Centre), festivals (Whistable), culture (eg UK’s leading autism podcast\u00a0The Autism Podcast<\/a>),\u00a0think tanks (eg Royal Society of Arts), technology (JV-LA), employment (Genius Within, which authored the\u00a0Neurodiversity at Work<\/a>\u00a0guide for the British Psychological Society and advises\u00a0ACAS<\/a>),\u00a0HEI (Cambridge, Waterloo) and research (Australian sociologist Judy Singer, who invented the term \u2018neurodiversity\u2019).<\/span>
\n Interdisciplinary and creative approaches to research is\u00a0de rigueur<\/i>\u00a0here, not the exception. Examples include\u00a0\u2018disordering dance\u2019 (Watson 2020); \u2018neurodiversity rong table\u2019 (Oliver 2020), and innovative approaches to studying neurodivergence spanning philosophy, social science, film and more (Russell\u00a0Exploring Autism\u00a0<\/i>project\u00a02015). Members have also created\u00a0 methods through the Network\u2019s regular creative seminars (eg Watson\u2019s \u2018dysco\u2019 which is touring Southbank Centre 2021). <\/span>
\nIt was co-founded by an artist-curator Dr Kai Syng Tan with a sculptor-social scientist Dr Ranjita which evidences its mission to \u2018diversify neurodiversity\u2019 (Tan 2020). Distinct to\u00a0advocacy or support groups and related blogs, or other Jiscmail groups, the Network is \u2018open to anyone with an interest in\u00a0the messy and magical nexuses of creativity, neurodiversity, and research\u2019, and to \u2018support others as critical friends\u2019 (Tan and Dhital 2020),\u00a0within and beyond UK (members are in US, Canada, Taiwan, India, Europe and Australia). <\/span>
\nThat the Network includes people with OCD, dementia, stroke and fibromyalgia\u00a0enacts disidentification, which has upset the purists\/police of neurodiversity.\u00a0Members tell their own stories, rather than having their voices appropriated, commodified, co-opted, distorted, white-washed, re-packaged by others.\u00a0If disabled people have been historically and culturally silenced (Berger 2013) and representation is often \u2018oppressive or negative\u2019 (Hevey 1993, 423), the Network bypasses academic presses as gate-keepers of the \u2018intelligibility of knowledge\u2019 (Manning 2018) and enables those ignored in popular media a voice, which can now be examined (Egner 2019).<\/span>
